I have been working on the final of a soon-to-be-published collection of poems, PsalmSongspiration, which should have been in March, but for a few delays.
PsalmSongspiration is coined from three words: Psalms, songs, and inspiration, inspired by Apostle Paul’s admonition in Ephesians 5:18b and 19 NIV, “Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, songs, and make music from your heart to the Lord.”
As I grow older and closer to God, studying the Psalms intrigues me. I strive to read the entire book of Psalms each year. In the past, I regarded the Psalms as a quick read for days when I couldn’t study because they just felt like rhythmic lines. But not anymore because the Lord in his mercy has revealed more about Christ through the Psalms.
Psalms, as scholars say, are poetic verses, songs of praise, thanksgiving and repentance. The Psalms, in my understanding, reveal God’s character, glory, rulership, authority and love for his people. The psalms were (and still are) prophetic words rendered before the Lord to instruct, teach, counsel, and guide men.
1 Chronicles 25 describes how David, Asaph, Jeduthun, Heman, sons of Korah, and other men prophesied with harps, lyres and cymbals in thanksgiving and praise to the Lord. Under David’s supervision, these men wrote music. They were skilful and trained to render songs in the house of the Lord. These men had an intimate relationship with God.
I would further describe the Psalms as the foundation of a grand house. David and the writers had a foretaste of God’s eternal plan. These men foresaw and foretold everyone about the great house the Lord was building: Christ, the Messiah. Speaking of Jesus, David, in Psalm 110:1 NIV said, “The LORD says to my lord, sit at my right hand until I make my enemies your footstool for your feet — Hebrew 10:13 refers to this verse.”
Several New Testament writers, like Matthew, Acts of the Apostles, Hebrews, etc refer to the prophecies of David. Jesus in Matthew 27:35 & 46 quoted Psalms 22: 1& 18. Again in Luke 23:46, Jesus quoted Psalm 31:5.
PsalmSongspiration is a compilation of thirty poetic words and songs of gratitude inspired by the Psalms and the words of the Messiah. (The Psalms and other books of the Bible inspire most of the poems you’d read in the collection.) This book serves not only as a collection of poetic verses but also as a call to awaken our hearts for the Lord. It is a reminder of our need for intimacy with God. It reminds us that the bridegroom is calling his bride to come into her inner chamber and dine with him.
Do you know that most psalms employ repetition? We need these repetitions for instruction, encouragement, and faith-building. Whether you’re feeling discouraged, overwhelmed, or helpless, the words in PsalmSongspiration will lift you and inspire your heart, mind, soul, and body. You’ll find words of encouragement, deliverance, and strength to help you persevere through the difficult times, words that will help you deepen your walk with God.
